tarting in 2005 Kevin began lighting events with The Ohio State University GLBTA after buying his first lighting fixture, the Chauvet ZX-05. This fixture now hangs in the office and is still used at least once a month. Since then, Pure Illumination (and her industrial sister company ABM Lights) has acquired many other fixtures as well as worked with a wide array of rental sources to make any and all equipment available to our customers.
Pure Illumination has been honored by Kaleidoscope Youth Center for three years of service to The Other Prom (hosted by Columbus GLBTA). We have also worked with many rising stars in the academic setting of The Ohio State University providing both Lighting design for distinction projects of new directors, actors, and other designers and production electrician skills for all of these shows.
In 2009 our head designer was selected for a showcase at The Ohio State University and received the award for Most Outstanding Contribution to the 2008-2009 Production Season. His design was for a student written play, The Fourth Room.
In 2011 Pure Illumination began working closely with The Highland West Players, a community theater group based out of the west side of Columbus, Ohio.
word from our Head Designer, Kevin Duchon
My earliest memory was of myself in my childhood bedroom. All the blinds were down and I was supposed to be laying in bed recovering from some illness. I was wide awake, however, before the sun rose. I was sitting in the absolute darkness of my room, until suddenly a gentle glow began to creep through the blinds. I ducked my head between them and the cold glass of the window, my warm breath clouding my vision; the smooth fog was the color of an apricot. My nose made a tiny smear that I put my eye to in order to witness the first sunrise I had ever seen. I was transfixed. I watched light pour over the trees and grass through the tiny window I had created. I sat and watched until the whole sky had faded from dark to bright hues. Then I abandoned my place between the window and the blinds to return to the carpeted floor, the room no longer anything like it was before.
Light has a power to change any moment into something completely different. Every sunrise and sunset is beautiful, not just because it is huge and colorful, but because there is an emotion we feel during the experience. The feelings that flood us during great events leave impressions on us. A beautiful scene needs light that reflects the mood. I create this emotion.
There are two kinds of light – the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures. (James Thurber)
